Hey all. I lived in Poyda Hall my freshman year (1991 - 1992). Part of the fun of living in Poyda was that we had the "Poyda Ghost". Anyone else know the story? Or had any strange occurrences that can only be attributed to him?

from what i've heard, gee and olson (where i lived my frosh and junior years) also are pretty active from a supernatural standpoint, as are the woods behind the soccer fields. someone even told me they saw a ghost just kinda chilling on centennial lake, but i've only heard that once and i'm fairly certain that was more alcoholism than a genuine ghost sighting.

and let's not forget the myriad ghosts in fine arts. ;) a friend's ex-boyfriend said he once had the spirit of a little girl actually follow him out of the building. he got so freaked out he told it to leave him alone, and apparently it never bothered him again. and there's something with the downstairs FA men's bathroom, i think?

a friend of mine lived in poyda (i THINK it was the third floor) our senior year and she had all sorts of weird happenings go on in her room, like electrical things (the tv, her ipod dock) would go haywire and turn on and off totally sporadically.

at some point during my rider years (i want to say it was my sophomore year), we had a ghost hunter actually come to rider and he said there were, like, nine ghosts on campus.

i never witnessed anything, though. although, i will say that on some of the nights i worked late in the rider news office (which is now in the ridge house basement) and was all alone, i got really freaked out a few times. but i think that was more being too overworked and underslept to control my paranoia. and, come to think of it.... during my junior year, my shut-and-locked door would randomly fly open and slam shut, but i always attributed that to the weird tunnel effect in the dorm hallways.

did you ever have any run-ins with the poyda ghost? these stories always fascinate me.... especially since i don't live on campus and don't have to worry about running into something that'll scare the everloving crap out of me at one in the morning. <3

ps: where in SB are you? i work for the south brunswick post and am seriously in love with the township.

I've also heard about the Red Lady, and Bill (I THINK that's his name), a guy who hung himself somewhere in the vicinity of the Spitz (under the stage in the storage area, maybe?). I wish I could find more info about the ghosts at Rider, as I love the paranormal and am a current student!!

Yes! The Red Lady and Bill are among theatre ghosts. Before the Spitz became an official performance space with an official name (it was essentially a rehearsal room when it wasn't used for Black Box theatrical productions), the main theatre and the basement seemed to be the hub of that activity. Actually, being nearly three years beyond my college days, I'm not sure if the Spitz has had any ghostly activity. It had just been christened during..... hm, my senior year (05-06), I think?

I learned the most about Rider's ghosts by spending time with some of the Sacred Circle members (I did some photography for them at one point, and its members included several friends of mine and people whose company I enjoyed, so I hung around them a bit). Other than that, most of what I heard were rumours, legends and second-hand encounters.

Aside from what's already been mentioned, I've heard:
-- someone had taken a photograph that featured what looked like a recently deceased student's face
-- the men's bathroom in Fine Arts (first floor, the one to the left of the lobby) is wicked haunted to the point of people getting nosebleeds if they don't leave quickly enough
-- there's a Wendigo in the woods behind Poyda and the soccer field (I guess where the newest building's being built? I haven't been on campus in quite some time)
-- people have seen a white lady when it snows
-- a number of people have said that if they go for a walk in the woods, they physically can't step beyond a certain point because they're either immobilised or just get a terrible feeling

Also, the New Building and the SRC were under constructed my junior year, and I remember hearing quite a few murmurings of how all the disruption on campus had driven a lot of the ghosts to the farthest point on campus (the woods that jut up against 95) and that said spirits were PISSED. But I never heard anything more about it.

I'm sure there's a way to find out more about Rider's hauntings and paranormal weirdness, but I honestly wouldn't know where to start. October always seemed like it was the best and most fruitful time to dig around for that sort of information.

Sacred Circle? Never heard of them...then again, this is only my 3rd semester on campus (I started out as a Westminster student), and I haven't had much time to delve into anything.

I DO know that Bill was active on/around Halloween a few years ago...my friend and I are in Alpha Psi and she said she had some kind of interaction with him, but I don't remember the details. I don't know if they've actually had any ghostly activity physically in the Spitz.

If you're facing the lobby though, the men's bathroom is on the right side, and the women's is on the left..did they switch?

Okay, I never had a run-in with any kind of ghost when I was at Rider. But of course the ghost in Fine Arts could explain the craziness of the computers in the J-Lab before they upgraded to G5's.

But I was a part of security's student patrol & I could tell you some stories of some of the stuff they've pulled out of the lake. For a while I actually thought that they could find Jimmy Hoffa in that lake. LOL

I know I'm stumbling across this thread a little late, but I'm a current Rider student and would love to hear about some of the stuff they're pulled out of the lake :)

Oh they pulled all sorts of stuff from the lake. It was mostly old junk stuff but two things that really stick out in my mind were this one time they pulled out a basketball hoop. And this other time these two guys from the student patrol went in the lake and pulled out a shopping cart.

And what stuns the hell out of me is that they actually went into the lake! Then again, I heard something about that's the hazing ritual that the swimming team does. Haven't gotten that confirmed though.

Wait, they went into the lake...and survived?! Eugh!!

I haven't heard anything about the swim team making people go in, but I hope they don't!!

I hope it's not true either. I mean, from what those two guys from the student patrol told me, that lake is prety nasty.

The lake edge used to be much more accessible - without all the weeds and stuff that line it. Within the Greek community, getting thrown into the lake was done for celebrations, mainly on Sweetheart night. Yeah, there was a lot of crap in there back then. You had to be careful not to get cut on anything. And to stay clear of the pair of swans that owned the lake. They could be nasty!
