Fellow Rider alumni, I need your help!!!!

Today I went up to career services and met with a councilor there (I'm currently trying to get out of being "underemployed") and she gave me a thing about informational interviewing for networking purposes & I think maybe it's about time I tried to find out about the field/indsturies that I want to get into.

Here's the thing: I'm trying to get into something in communications (public relations/marketing and/or graphic desgin) and/or something adminstrative. My desired indsturies are education, healthcare, and the non-profit sector (according to my friends, I'd flourish in these fields).

If anyone knows of any resources, please contact me at nonameface78@verizon.net. I'm about a half-hour from Rider in Bucks County, so the closer to the Trenton/Philadelphia area, the better.

Oh and before you say anything, yes, I'm going back to meet with that councilor at career services. So far, she's improved my resume dramatically (I went to a state-funded thing and they REALLY messed me up), so I'm not giving up on her just yet.

And thanks if you can help me!

LOL. I sure am. I've seen them in concert three times so far (the most recent being last month when they were in Philadelphia) & I have all their CDs.

It is good that you plan on going back because you must! Career Services at Rider is a unique thing (don't know anyone else at those other "R" schools getting any help finding a job). They were very helpful and I landed a few interviews. However, in the field of writing, salaries are not exactly tempting. I wound up finding my a sweet job on my own for Coca Cola while I go to grad school to maybe get back into my field.

Marketing is fun. PR is lying for a living and I wasn't too happy doing that. However, you can usually do PR through the marketing department or through an Ad Agency (in your case, one that specializes in non profits or education) or even directly for a school. Its good times at the Rider Career Services though, be confident! They will help you. They want us alumni to make them look good.

I did an internship at a hospital during my last year at Rider & I really enjoyed it. It was in the hospital's marketing/PR department and I enjoyed myself there, so that's why I really want to do that. I'm not really looking to make big bucks (trust me, I'm used to the frugal life). As long as I can live comfortably, that's fine with me.

And I'll tell you something, the Career Services office at Rider is way better than most of the stuff I've turned to. I've been royally screwed by employment agencies and even state programs (and the state I'm talking about is Pennsylvania) that are supposed to help people with employment issues. I even went to this one job coach who was paid by the state of Pennsylvania to help me and she ended up making things even worse! Hell, she acted like the only thing she would do for me is look in the local newspaper for job openings & I'm like, "This is a waste of my time and taxpayer money...I can do that for free!" It finally got to the point where I was like, "I don't know what to do" and then I re-read an entry I made in this community and a comment where someone said about Career Services, so I called and made the appoiment. Thank God I did! I went there and the councilor I met with knew just what I needed. She sat down with me and we created a new resume and she gave me some resources to check out. Now she wants me to come back to find out about more resources that they have & I'm like, "Okay!"

And thank God at least one school I went to is helping me. I went to the career services office at Bucks County Community College and they were like, "Maybe you should go over to Rider and talk to them since they're more adapt to working with people looking for more 'professional' careers."

My first year out of Rider I was making 12 an hour at a marketing company I worked for part time during college. They made me full time after graduation and it was my only offer so I went with it.

After a year of that I started to feel like I wasted my time even going to college and then I get a phone call from Rider. Instantly, I thought it was the typical "Donate to the alumni fund" crap and I said "Get me a damn job and I'll give you money!"...I kind of screamed at them...and the response I got was "That's why I was calling...to see if you found a respectable job yet..." and then I made an appointment for Career Services.

They set up an interview for me at a company over in PA actually but it was too far for me to travel and the salary was only 30k so I couldn't move out there. But they did help with resume writing and showing me resources on how to find my own job and I wound up finding one at Coca Cola which is decent. I am finishing up graduate school and plan on teaching at a community college I went to before Rider sometime at the end of 2009.

So career services was a great help. They didn't get me the job I have, I found it myself. But they were helpful in prepping me. I have many friends from other colleges who offer nothing whatsoever. It makes me happy to know we are getting what we paid for from Rider!

"Get me a damn job and I'll give you money!"

That's what I say every time I get a thing in the mail asking me to donate money. LOL

And I'm glad too that I'm getting my money's worth in regards to this. Like I said, I went to the career services office at the community college I went to before Rider and they were next to clueless on how I should go about things. The councilor even told me that I'd be better off going over to Rider!

But right now it's mostly been retail jobs and working with a temp agency (I got out of the latter very quickly though), so I dunno how that's going to help me. At least I got a decent quality education though.
